The Hereford World Map dates from the 5th century AD. It is very detailed, and as the author himself states that it is a representation of history. The map represents a particular worldview -with Jerusalem at the center of the universe.
There are two directly opposite ways of looking at the world -through the worldview of Civilization; or through the worldview of Culture. Civilization is the world of cities, politics, wars, greed, nations, and empire. Culture is the world of revelation, philosophy, invention, science, and tradition. Neither worldview is better than the other; they are a matter of maturity. When one is young, it is exciting to feel a part of the rushing and exciting world of politics and change. As one grows older, one has become disappointed in the constant striving of civilization -and looks for more lasting and eternal values that culture offers. It is really a matter of taste and disposition. Culture and Civilization are organized through different astronomical cycles. One cycle comes from the East and proceeds Westward. The other cycle moves in the opposite direction from the West to the East. One completes its cycle in 25,925 years; while the other moves at a much slower pace. Our book, The Origin of Culture and Civilization, presents an insight into this conflict between worldviews. We attempt to look at ancient culture and civilization through the authentic reports of the ancient people themselves. In this way we gain a foundation of comparison -through which to understand the worldviews that surround us today.
